Hi All, My name is Megan and I live in Arequipa, Peru, with my husband Carlos, and our many animals. We have six dogs, two horses, two cats, two guinea pigs, a tortoise, and a rat. I hate leaving my animals when we travel, especially my dogs, so we decided to start traveling with our dogs. I hope this blog will help other people in similar situations to start traveling with their dogs and that we can share information on dog friendly places as there is little information about traveling with pets within Peru.
About our dogs:
TEDDY
Teddy is 7 years old. He is a mix breed that I found as puppy in Siem Reap, Cambodia. He is the oldest of our current pack. Teddy is an interesting dog with some definite behavioral quirks. He doesn’t like people. Not even my husband. He only likes to be with me and when I am not there he is happy to go and dig a hole in the garden and wait for my return. Teddy is also very grumpy with the other dogs, he likes to play with them on his terms, but if they dare to touch him when he is sleeping, or jump on him, or initiate anything with him, he will growl and drive them away. However he never attacks them and never bites them, he just likes his peace. Teddy is an avid hunter and goes into terrier mode when he sees something running. His favourite thing to do is walk in the countryside and chase mice and rats!
PAPI
Papi is a little over a year old. He is a pitbull that we rescued from a market here in Arequipa. He was in a bad state when we got him, his legs were deformed from being in a tiny cage for so long, he had bad intestinal issues, liver problems, and skin problems. Now a year later he is healthy and energetic. He is the most lovable dog, always looking for a hug or a cuddle on the couch. He adores baby animals and loves when we have new puppies in the house for him to look after. Papi’s favourite thing is playing tug of war. He is the best and we never win!
LOLA and CHESTER
Lola and Chester are brother and sister. They are Peruvian hairless dogs and are just under a year old. They are always together. They eat together, sleep together, play together. They are their own private little team and always have each other’s back. Chester will stand and watch over Lola when she is eating a bone, and Lola will gang up on the bigger dogs with him if they dare to play too rough! Peruvian hairless dogs are so interesting. Their skin in a few degrees hotter than other dogs and people say that if you have arthritis or injured muscles that you should get them to sleep on the sore muscle and their heat helps. I never liked clothes on dogs, but these two need clothes to protect them from the sun and from bugs. They also get cold very quickly and need lots of warm places to sleep. Their favorite activity is stealing food from the other dogs.
WILSON
Wilson was my christmas present from my husband this year. He is a great dane, 6 months old, and growing like a weed. He is big and goofy and his tail should be classified as a weapon. He loves everyone and everything, especially walk times and playing with the other dogs. He doesn’t seem to realize that he is huge, and tries to play rough with Lola and Chester and they get mad at him. We are working on making sure he has good manners as he is taller than me when he tries to jump up! He has been the biggest challenge for traveling as we needed to buy a bigger car just so he could fit!
NALA
Nala is our newest addition. She is a mix breed puppy who is 10 weeks old. She is opinionated and bossy and is planning on being the queen of the house. She bullies the other dogs and then gets upset when they don’t want to play with her. She loves food and is always in the kitchen looking for scraps. She also adores the cats and her favourite activity is sneaking into the cats’ side of the house and playing with them.
